Giving Tuesday at Veritas Prep

Veritas Prep December 2, 2024 -

Exactly one year ago, Mr. Byerly visited Veritas Prep from his University of Kansas graduate program. He met a community of teachers at Veritas who clearly demonstrated excellence and collegiality. “I knew I was at the right place.” He goes on, “Being a teacher is hard, but I am now a part of a collection of individuals working tirelessly toward a united vision of forming the human person.”

Veritas Prep’s new Latin and Humane Letters instructor, Brian Byerly, grew up in southeast Tennessee. At the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, he met an incredible mentor who inspired a love of classical literature. Mr. Byerly mentioned wanting to be an extraordinary teacher to some friends during a night out, but he expressed concern that teaching in a classical school required much of its faculty, and he didn’t want to be dropped into the deep end without a rope. To achieve excellence, he would need exceptional colleagues and generous mentors. Someone in the group suggested he check out Great Hearts.

Now at Veritas Prep, Mr. Byerly teaches 8th grade Latin and 11th grade Humane Letters. Most delightfully, Mr. Byerly’s students enjoy his “Folk Fridays” in which he teaches a weekly folk song related to the Humane Letters text, filling the beautiful hallways of Veritas with song as they were meant to be. Please welcome Mr. Byerly when you see him. We are delighted he’s found a home at Veritas.
